On the West Coast of New Zealand lies one of the most beautiful natural retreats across the country: Hokitika Gorge. This South Island gem is surrounded by mature forest, full of panoramic views, and struck through by a river of clear blue water. The gorge is just one part of the Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve and a must-see on any South Island caravan trip.

If you’re considering a private campervan hire in NZ and need a destination worth the trip, this is one of the best places to go. Read on as the team from Kia Ora Campers breaks down the history of this stunning destination, what to expect from the natural scenery in the gorge, and must-do activities you can’t miss.

History of the Hokitika Gorge

If nothing else, Hokitika Gorge is a demonstration of how powerful glaciers really are. Gorges are formed by streams carving through hard layers of rock, breaking them down and carrying the debris away. This one is no different, except its river is fed by glacial runoff, making it a particularly interesting piece of South Island nature.

Why is Hokitika Gorge so blue?

If there’s one thing this landmark is known for, it’s the shining turquoise colour of the water. This mesmerising deep blue spans the entirety of the river, running through the gorge, making for an incredible photo. But why is Hokitika Gorge so blue?

As it turns out, we have glaciers to thank for this. Glaciers aren’t actually stationary; they move very slowly. As they shift across the landscape, they grab random rocks from the surrounding slopes and slowly grind them into a fine dust known as glacier flour. Once this dust makes it into the water, it’s carried downstream, and when sunlight catches on those suspended particles, it turns the water a deep blue colour.

Hokitika Gorge has particularly clear water, allowing the sunlight to shine through the surface and into the bottom fairly easily. Combined with the glacial flour suspended in the water, this creates the iconic turquoise colour we all know and love.

Must-Do Activities in or Near Hokitika Gorge

See the Gorge on Foot

The gorge walks are the most well-known attraction of this part of the Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve. The most popular track is, by far, the Hokitika Gorge Walk, a short 15-minute stroll through the gorge’s most beautiful spots. Expect a well-maintained path through native bush with several viewing platforms along the way, all perfect for grabbing that frame-worthy family photo. There is also the Kowhai Walk, which is a 45-minute track that takes you in a loop through the surrounding forest and the edge of the gorge itself.

Note: The suspension bridge has been closed since September 2023 and is estimated to reopen in October 2024. Even without walking the bridge, you can still experience all this natural beauty. But if the bridge is what’s drawing you to the gorge, it might be worth waiting until summer has truly kicked in.

Hit the Beach

Hokitika Gorge - Iconic Hokitika beach driftwood sign.

As any seasoned caravan traveller will know, nothing is better than pulling up to the beach and spending the evening chilling with your family. Watching the sun disappear over the waves while you enjoy a quick homemade meal is what dream vacations are made of. For our money, nowhere is better to do this than Hokitika Beach.

This isn’t a swimming beach unless you’re pretty comfortable in the waves, but there’s plenty of black sand beach for sandcastle-making and pounamu hunting! Walk along the coast and take a picture with the iconic driftwood ‘Hokitika’ sign while you’re there!

Don’t Miss Hokitika Town

Nothing is better than small-town New Zealand, and Hokitika is proof of that. This fun spot is known for its quirky, artsy vibe, friendly hospitality, and unbeatable views. Whether you’re checking out the Hokitika Museum to learn more about the region’s history or want to hit Lake Kaniere on your way into town, there are countless things to see and do here.

Hokitika Sandwich Company is an absolute must if you’re stopping off in this quiet little town. With great ingredients and even better sandwiches, this community staple will put plenty of pep in your step before a walk through the gorge.
